Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BSER) is an advanced tool designed to evaluate electrical impulses as they travel from the inner ear to the brain.
When a sound is presented to the ear, an electrical pulse is generated. This pulse travels across several nerve crossings (synapses) on its way to the brain. There is a (very) brief delay as each pulse crosses each nerve connection on its way to the brain.
Shea Center For Ears test equipment measures how long it takes each pulse to make it to the brain and compares this time with the patient's other ear and with broad patient norms.
In this way, a simple hearing test (using highly sophisticated computer analysis) can detect evidence of a tumor of the hearing nerve or of more generalized disease such as multiple sclerosis.
